theres a train going from milano to brig practically everyday only once a day, you can even take the cuchette and get a good nights rest. and once youre in brig youre already in the canton of wallis, so from there zermatt is only about another half-hour away, again by train.

You can get your tickets one of two ways - buy them online at Trenitalia's website or wait until you get to Italy and do it at the Milan train station. I would wait until arrival in Italy. The train will not sell out if you wait. Purchase them a couple days prior to your departure - you'll have to go to the international agent/window to purchase those tickets. Bring a printed copy of the time you want to leave in case the Trenitalia agent doesn't speak English. If you will use the Trenitalia website, you must click on the "international" tab and use the Italian names for the stops - Milano C.LE(central station) > Zermatt.

To find the detailed stops along the way, use Germany's national rail website. Trenitalia does not offer this feature. After you enter your 'to' and 'from' stops, check the box of the trip you are interested in(or check all box) and then click on "details for selection" and then click on "show intermediate stops" - all the stops along the way will show.
